Race Updates

We're looking forward to implementing this new format which will allow beginners and experienced racers alike to enjoy a great day of adventure racing. The running and biking course will be marked to allow more casual racers to feel comfortable in the woods while advanced checkpoints will test adventure racing veterans.

The Course

Bears, Bears, Bears. Wawayanda is loaded with them which helps to add some excitement to this venue. Wawayanda has some of the best mountain biking around with bike access on most trails. The park has many well-marked trails and good maps are available (the official park map is not one of them). Lake Wawayanda serves as the backdrop for our main event area and the paddle venue.

Wawayanda State Park History

Wawayanda State Park embraces almost 10,000 acres of forests and waters in the rough, hilly country of the New Jersey Highlands. The name Wa-wa-yanda is the phonetic rendition of the Lenape Indians name said to mean "water on the mountain". Wawayanda Lake, one of the focal points of the park, is a mile and a half long, has five and a half miles of wooded shoreline, and covers 255 acres. The trail system in Wawayanda has become quite extensive in recent years. At present, thirteen marked trails, not including the Appalachian Trail, are available for hiking and riding.

Required Gear for Adventure Race Participants

  • Mountain Bike
  • Helmet
  • Type 3 Life Jacket
  • Map Case (1 per team)- It is extremely important to keep your maps clean & dry.
  • Food & Water (Adventure Races are 100% Self-Sufficient)

Note about Maps:
Each team will receive a map from Genesis on race day with instructions and checkpoints already plotted. It is ok and recommended (NOT REQUIRED) to look at other maps of the area prior to the event and even bring them with you on race day. It's a fact of life that not every map has every trail on it so having this additional information can come in handy when navigating unknown terrain. Additional maps can be found by visiting a state park office or online through web searches. A little extra pre-race map analysis can really make a difference.

Awards

Each race has Competitive and Casual categories. It's up to your team which category you compete in, we will ask you at check-in time which category you wish to race in. The Casual category has marked trail running and biking courses and the kayak map is plotted for you.  The Competitive category has extra checkpoints which must be plotted by UTM coordinates. These points add distance to the event and are typically in harder locations.

All finishers will receive a finisher medal and some overall winners will be awarded prizes.
