Race Updates
Race Update #3 - The race course is now set, it includes 18 miles of mountain biking, 7 miles of paddling, and 17 miles of trekking for a total of 40 miles. We have removed the swimming portion of the event, but you will still be carrying your lifejacket throughout the race. We have listed minimal required gear, it's up to you to plan for variable weather conditions. It will be cool in the morning and near nightfall.
We will be giving out one 1:24,000 scale map that covers the entire race course. It is suppose to be waterproof but we would recommend taking steps to keep it dry. It does not contain all of the trails available to you for this race so we highly recommend picking up the map mentioned in Update #1.
Make sure you have plenty of food in your pack. There are natural water sources on the course that you will need to treat. You will also be able to leave supplies at the mountain bike transition area at beach pond. This transition is more than half way through the race. Again, you are not allowed to leave anything behind at Beach Pond once you leave.
Race Update #2 - We have a few notes about the race format. We're still working on course testing, right now we're expecting 8-9 hours for the lead teams. Due to daylight considerations, we will have a 12 or 13 hour cut-off for all teams. We will make an effort to shorten the course so all teams can cross the finish line.
On Friday, we will be checking people in at Beach Pond right at the CT/RI border on Rt. 165. We will quickly inspect gear and verify that you can plot UTM points. You can leave your mountain bikes, shoes, food and water supplies at the transition area there. However, you must take everything with you when you pass through this transition area during the race, so don't leave anything too heavy.
We will NOT be handing out maps or having a pre-race meeting the night before. Maps and race instructions will be handed out at the start of the race.
Race Update #1 - We've now had several scouting trips for this course and it is 90% complete. You can anticipate lots of challenging navigation as the area is full of roads and trails not on the maps. We will be handing out 1:24,000 topo map(s), but we highly suggest that you pick up a copy of the "Hiking Trails, Footpaths and Roads in Arcadia" map from the Map Center in RI by calling 401.421.2184.
